Mithai Mandhir at Chennai

What to eat: Gujarati & Rajasthani Cuisine

Location: Mithai Mandir, Vadapalani, Chennai

Verdict: If you're a Gujarati or Rajasthani eagerly looking for your regional thali in Chennai, this is the place you have to visit. As the name suggests, this place is a Mandhir(temple) for sweets as well as chats & snacks like Dhokla. I have been to their branch in Pondicherry last year and had pleasant food. So I was eagerly looking for an opportunity to visit their Chennai branch. After completing a temple darshan, we headed to their branch which lies in between Vadapalani Murugan temple and Arcot Road. It's a tiny food joint with ground and first floor.

We got a table in ground floor and ordered for a plate of gulab jamun(50₹), Malai cham cham (35₹) , Kachori (25₹) and a masala chai (25₹). Kachori was big stuffed with Moong dal based masala, and served alongwith super fresh and yummy mint chutney. Malai chum chum was a brilliant dish, never to miss out in future visits. Gulab jamun was 2 hot and big pieces, super soft. Masala chai had lot of masala, thick and was large in quantity.

Only problem I see here is the language as a barrier, the people who take orders are Nepalese who don't understand or speak tamil or English. I ordered for 2 chai, but that guy got only 1 and said something in hindi which I don't understand. I have seen waiters who don't speak English even in America (mostly in Mexican and Chinese restaurants). So I as a foodie don't mind it as it's not a big deal infront of tasty food. If you visit during dinner time, just go for their thali. However they can add more business if speaks in local language. Overall a pocket friendly eatery for mouth watering North Indian cuisine.
