Gelateria Montecatini Terme

What to eat: Gelatos ( Italian Ice creams)

Where: Gelateria Montecatini Terme (GMT), Goubert Avenue (Near Alliance Francaise), Pondicherry

Verdict: No need to fly to Italy to taste gelato. Just visit mini France in India ie., Puducherry aka Pondicherry aka Pondy. GMT on beach road serves numerous varieties of gelatos. It comes in cup or cone. Price depends on the ingredients, but generally starts at 60rs per scoop and 5rs extra for waffel cone. We had a cone of cashew nut gelato and a cone of milk+caramel+chocolate. It costs just 60rs per cone. Actually we have to pay 5rs extra for house made waffel cone. But it had minor damages, so we got it for free :) Saw a French couple buying gelatos in a big box, Not sure if they will ever have anything else for lunch. May one day I should try that way. Overall a worthy and a must visit place to have gelatos.

Baker Street

What to eat: French delicacies like Croissant, Quiche, Pizza, Macroons,...

Where: Baker Street, Bussy street, Puducherry

Verdict: Baker Street is not a street, but it is one of the finest french bakery in Pondy. Here you can find most of the French delicacies fresh and yummy. We had an olive chicken pizza and packed some croissants (plain and chocolate). Unfortunately macroons were not available. Pizza had thin crust with lot of cheese. Croissant was soft with enough flavour of butter. Overall bill was 380₹. Must visit place to pack some French delicacies before ending your Pondy trip.

Mithai Mandhir At Pondy

What to eat: North Indian chat and sweets

Where: Mithai Mandhir, Ambour Salai (Near Manakula Vinayagar Temple), Pondicherry

Verdict: One of the best chat shops in Pondy. Always crowded...One need to develop patience as it takes some time to get a table. But we never worry about that as the chat items were very fresh and yummy.

Ordered for Samosa (20₹), Channa Samosa (47₹), Rasamalai (40₹). Samosa was brilliant along with the accompanied sweet chutney. My wife had Channa samosa which had some spice powder topping (chat masala and something else ??). I had to help my wife to finish the chat which was stuffy enough to skip a meal.

Bit disappointed as Jilebi was not available. Anyhow there is always a next time in life. Ended the meal with yummy rasamalai which had some pista slices on it. Overall all the food items are worthy and value for money. And it's a nice place for chat after darshan in Manakula Vinayagar temple.

KBS Kofe Barr

What to drink: Coffee and Masala Paal (Milk)

Where: KBS Kofe Barr, At the corner of Rue Saint Martin, Near Chief Secretariat, Puducherry

Verdict: Having a coffee or Masala Paal on a Sunday evening, that too in front of beach...it's like dream comes true for me. Climate was so cool today in Pondy. Promenade or Rock beach is one of the beautiful beaches in India.

Whilst walking towards the beach, we saw a crowd standing and sipping Masala Paal in KBS Kofi bar. So we too opted for a coffee and Masala Paal. Milk had a strong flavour of added spices and Badam with a thick layer spices and Milk cream. It costs 30₹ for Masala Milk and 20₹ for coffee.

They also sell delicious Puttu (Steamed rice powder) for 20₹ in the morning. You should definitely try this one fine day after a stroll on the beach road.

Pondy Sri Kamatchi

What to eat: South Indian Non Veg Meal & Biriyani

Where: Hotel Sri Kamatchi, 100ft Road, Puducherry

Verdict: Kamatchi is the best place to have Tamil nadu style Non Veg meal in Pondy. Ask any cab or auto driver for the best briyani in Pondy. They will direct you to here. After a long walk in Auroville, we asked our driver to stop over here for lunch. We had chicken briyani, mutton briyani, coriander chicken fry and fish fingers.

Mutton Biriyani
Briyani was made of tiny seeraga samba rice, not much spicy but very tasty, could n't find onion/tomato separate. However briyani quantity was bit less, as they also provide steamed rice and rasam along with it. Rasam was too tasty, I literally drank some at the end.

Chicken Biriyani
Fish fingers were crunchy, but what made it super tasty was the accompanied mayonnaise. Mayo was bit sweet..I haven't had anything like this earlier. Coriander chicken fry was just like chicken 65, hot and juicy.

Overall I would say it's far better than Anjappar and other so called Chettinad restaurants. Total meal set us back by 896₹. While we walk down the exit, found an ice cream parlour downstairs where they sell ice sweet beeda for 25₹. Don't miss it when you come here. If you ever hit Pondy, don't miss the yummy chettinad style cuisine in Kamatchi.

Surguru

What to eat: South Indian Tiffen and Lunch

Where: Surguru Restaurant, Mission Street, Pondicherry

Verdict: Surguru is the top-notch south Indian veg restaurant in Puducherry. It has various branches. We had breakfast in Mission St branch. Ambience was super cool. You may get a feeling of entering a high cost restaurant. But believe me it's vfm when compared to Saravana bhavan. You will get fully satisfied at the end of the meal. We had pongal, vada, poori and filter coffee. Pongal was soo softy, melts at mouth. All were happy at the end. Total meal set us back by 299₹.
