What to eat: Mutton delicacies along with Parotta & Salna
Location: Arumugam Evening Mutton Stall, Next to Chandran Mess, Goripalayam, Madurai
Whenever I plan to cut down on fatty foods, then comes the next Madurai trip. How can one have a calorie controlled diet on a Madurai visit. I always go up a size after such visits. This time I have decided not over-indulging in fatty foods. And then I saw that stall which serves several varieties of Mutton such as elumbu sukka (bone fry), suvarotti (spleen), eeral(liver) sukka,...
Arumugam Mutton stall opens only by evening and goes upto midnight. Ordered for Parotta (10₹) , Muttai Dum (40₹), Kottu Parotta(60₹), Mutton Sukka(120₹), Pepper Chicken(100₹) as takeaway.
Muttai Dum is nothing but Egg, Onion stuffed Parotta cut into 4 pieces. It's known as Ceylon Parotta in Chennai, Muttabaq in Saudi & Yemen, Murtabak in Malaysia & Indonesia. It makes an awesome pair along with salna(mutton gravy).
Kottu Parotta (known as Kottu Rotti in Ceylon) was cut parotta pieces tawa fried alongwith Onion, tomato, curry leaves, salna...another master piece from this tiny place. Mutton Sukka takes the top place...got juicy Mutton pieces pan fried alongwith onion, curry leaves and pepper. Pepper chicken was a normal one. Just remember this place is famous only for mutton, Not chicken.
There is nothing much to say about ambience as this is a roadside stall, not a good place for a family dinner. But people flock in mostly for parcel or to tuck in some parotta alongwith their friends. You need to develop some patience before coming here as it would take at least 30mins just to get the parcel. A must visit place in Madurai if you're a meat lover.
