Idly at Sabarees

What to eat: Idly, Vadai and Filter Coffee

Where: Hotel Sree Sabarees, Town Hall Road, Madurai

Verdict: Guruvayoor Express was late as usual. I didn't had lunch and keeping my apetite for madurai food. Once train reached Madurai Junction, we went to Sabarees hotel without any second thought.

Ordered for a plate of Idly, 2 plates of medu Vadai and 2 filter coffee. Idlies were soft...comes with 5 different chutnies and sambar as accompaniment. But what made it special is 3 bowls of chutney and ellu podi(sesame Idly powder) mixed with nallennai(sesame oil). Vadai was just ok. Coffee was awesome as expected. Total bill was 96₹.

Suganya Parotta Kadai

What to eat: Parotta with salna

Where: Hotel Suganya, South Gate Market, Madurai

Verdict: Purotta (no..I am not wrong..this is how Madurai people call it) is a famous night time food in Madurai. My bro-in-law used to get some soft purotta and yummy chicken briyani from some hidden place whenever I goto Madurai. So this time I decided to find out the secret place. And I followed him tonight, leading to a small eatery called hotel Suganya.

Unfortunately chicken and Mutton Briyani(seeraga samba rice based) are already over. So we opted for Purotta which costs 12₹ per piece and a chilly chicken. This place is also famous for variety of gravies(Kolambu) made of chicken, mutton, country chicken, boti, and also muttai lappa (purotta with egg stuffing in the middle). Do try out when you visit Madurai.

Famous Jigarrthanda @ Madurai

What to eat/drink: Madurai Special ice cream drink called "Jigarthanda"

Where: Famous Jigarthanda Shop, Near Vilakkuthoon, Madurai

Verdict: "Jigar" means heart and "thanda" means cold. This drink makes your heart feel cool. Hence the name. It is the famous ice cream drink in Madurai. This is my 2nd review about this drink which was originated in this small stall in 1977.

Now there are many shops selling Jigarthanda around Madurai. But it is always special to have at its origin to taste the unique flavour. It is a mixture of nannari syrup, badam pisin, condensed milk with a scoop of ice cream topping. A mini costs 25₹ and a special costs 50₹. Do I need to say which one I had ? Whilst you visit Madurai to have Meenakshi darshan, just drop here to cool yourself.
