Balaji Dosai at Kandy

We skipped the lunch at Dambulla as we were traveling to Kandy today afternoon. Our bus reached Kandy after an hour and 45 minutes of travel. We got down just opposite to the famous Indian restaurant named "Balaji Dosai restaurant".

Ordered a pair of ulunda vadai(40LKR each), onion uttappam(a pair for 200LKR) and a ghee dosa (220 LKR). As usual, sambar was made of pumpkin. Not sure why only pumpkin is added to sambar in this country. Whatever it is, that was absolutely fantastic to go with dosai or vadai. Coconut chutney and chana masala were other sides for dosa and uttappam. Surprised to see two onion uttappam on a plate. Ghee dosa was too big for me to complete. Both quantity as well as quantity was great over here.

Washed down the meal with a milk tea(60LKR), while my friend had a ginger infused sulaiman tea(20LKR). Food was purely divine. We had food at the main branch opposite the tooth relic temple. This restaurant has another branch at the end of the road. And there is a one next to it with a word "Sri" added into the name. It is always better to have at the original branch rather than getting disappointed at other places.

Sri Lankan Delicacy at Dambulla

Happened to visit a local Srilankan hotel for dinner tonight. Decided not to have any kottu for dinner. So ordered few appams(12LKR) along with a fish fry(100LKR) and double chicken curry(200LKR).
Appam was freshly made. Fish fry was cold, but too yummy. Would be good if they have at least re-heated it. Chicken gravy was just ok, but had two big pieces. They also served some type of sambal which was like a chilli pickle, didn't touch it much.

Everything was good except that we had struggles in communicating with the Sinhala lady waiter. Luckily there was a Tamil guy to help us explaining rates and about various dishes.

Overall a descent food with pocket friendly price. They had lot of different buns(veg, plain, fish), Muscat halwa,...We may visit back if time allows.

Ice sticks at Trincomalee

Generally food is little pricey in Sri Lanka compared to Tamil Nadu. But ice cream is super cheap in this island country. Today we happened to find an ice cream kiosk while descending from Koneswaran kovil at Trincomalee. Me and my friend got yummicious strawberry and orange flavoured sticks for just 15LKR each. We are now addicted to ice creams.

Short-Eats at Nallur Festival

Happened to taste some short-eats like chilli stuffed Ulundhu Vadai(10LKR), masala Vadai(5LKR) near Nallur temple at Nallur in Sri Lanka. Fresh and delicious, but we restricted with just one piece on each variety.

There are lot of interesting food stalls opened today because of nallur festival. Let the pics speak the rest of the story.

Ice Cream at Jaffna

Oh my God. I could not believe that ice cream is so cheap and flavoursome in Jaffna. Found these ice cream vans just outside Jaffna fort. Bought these big cups for just 100LKR each. That's approximately 45.5INR. Never get such cheap and good one even in my home town Chennai. By the way, just FYI...Rio is the top notch ice cream place in this little town.

Hotel Rolex at Jaffna

Today's lunch was at hotel Rolex, one of the famous nonveg restaurants in Jaffna. Located at hospital road, just next to central bus stand.

I opted for fish meal(140LKR), while my travel companion ordered prawns buriyani(that's what they say) which costs 300LKR.

Fish meal had good amount of white rice with 3 veggies and an ayila fish fry. Only a garlic based gravy was served. Ayila fish was fresh and nicely cooked. As I was hungry, I had completed the meal. Otherwise, I may not as the rice was too big, and the accompanied gravy was not that good. No rasam was served for the meal. Had to complete the meal with garlic gravy and veggies like "ponnanganni" keerai, koothu and avarai poriyal. Loved the veggies and fish fry more than the rice.

Buriyani was served with devilled prawns, boiled egg, fish sambol and cut onions. My friend was saying buriyani was nothing but yellow colored rice. However he asked for it extra which was not charged. He was literally tired of peeling the top cover of each and every prawn, otherwise he was happy with it.

Food was certainly cheaper than in Colombo. For hungry travelers like us, it was just okay. But not sure if we may return.

Triple Colored Ice Cream at Nainatheevu

After an exhausted ferry journey, we found this ice cream van selling some yummy ice cream near nagadheepa Buddhist temple at Nainatheevu. Without knowing the singala language, some how we managed to get 2 cones of ice cream (locals call it as "Akkama") for 100LKR. Thats just 45 INR. Absolutely cheap, delicious, very much necessary on a hot day like this.
