Mummy Daddy Andhra Mess

Finally had an opportunity to tick off this "mess" from my bucket list. A small andhra mess located opposite to IIT back gate in Taramani attracts a lot of crowd for their spicy meal and biriyani.
Visited for lunch with a friend. Dining hall was pretty big located on the first floor. Its mostly super busy, but we got our seats quickly. Only problem is we had to share the table with strangers. Certainly not recommended for visit with the family.

Opted for chicken boneless biriyani, chicken moghalai(don't blame me for the spelling ) biriyani and an omelette. I don't find much difference between the two varieties of biriyani except that boneless one had a boiled egg and moghalai had some scrambled eggs. Both of them had the same base, spicy biriyani rice. Chicken pieces were bit hard, otherwise it was a perfect spicy meal.

As usual, diluted butter milk with tiny cut onion pieces was served as raita with a cup of gravy. Quantity was so huge that we could finish only one together. So had to get the other briyani packed. Omelette was chilly powder added, and a good one.

It seems like andhra meal is a better option with literally everything unlimited from rice, papad, veggies to curd. Never seen anywhere keeping a big vessel full of curd. My friend was munching the fried potato during the whole session alongside the biriyani.

Here are few pics of the Andhra meal.

At the end, we were given a token number which we had to say at the billing counter to pay the bill. Lunch set us back by 310₹ which was a totally worth for the amount of food we had. Would we visit again? Surely, just to try the andhra meal, but not for the biriyani. Folks having problem with spicy meal, better stay away from this eatery.

Spice Trail

It's an andhra-style restaurant located on Montieth Road at Egmore. Visited for lunch on Sunday afternoon with friends. Ambience was nice with enough space between the tables. Valet parking was available, however we parked nearby.

Two of us opted for veg meals whilst other wants to have mutton dum biriyani and chicken tikka biriyani. Vanchiram fish fry, andhra pepper chicken and andhra chilli chicken were the sides.

Andhra Veg Meal (126₹) - Served on a big plate with a cut banana leaf. Unlimited rice with a big appalam, a cup of sambar, vatta kolambu, rasam, curd, bitter gourd fry, gourd daal koottu. Initially had a round of rice with ghee and daal powder, which was quite normal. Next rounds have gone with sambar, kolambu, rasam and curd. Never tasted anything spicy. Bitter gourd fry was oily, but was a good one. Gourd daal koottu was good as well. Curd was quite thick one, but pickle was not served. Never thought of asking it. This can't be called as an andhra meal as the spicy level was low. When asked for an extra cup of curd and subji, served quickly.

Mutton Dum Biriyani (210₹) - Just had a single big boneless mutton piece in a oily non-spicy biriyani. Expected to have a hyderabadi style, but ended with a chennai-style one

Chicken Tikka Biriyani (210₹) - It was better than the previous one. Included four medium sized chicken tikka pieces. Both type of briyani were served with a half boiled egg, onion raita and a cup of nonveg gravy.

Vanchiram Fish Fry (200₹) - One of the best dishes we had today. A thick piece of seer fish fried enough with lot of spices. Found some crushed daniya on the toppedup masala.

Andhra Pepper Chicken (210₹) - Tender chicken pieces cooked in a pepper based masala. Good one, but the quantity was little.

Andhra Chilli Chicken (200₹) - Another tender chicken dish actually called as "pancha merapu kodi" meaning chicken with five hot spices. To be frank, it was a non-spicy green capsicum based chicken curry. A different kind of chicken dish made with low spicy masala mingled with the taste of capsicum. Liked it for the unique taste.

Definitely a good place for people who wants to have non-spicy food. But spicy food eaters like us may not visit more than once. If you ever visit, just go for chicken or fish meal instead of biriyani which is not that worthy.

Hotel Campus

Been with a friend for dinner at hotel campus last evening. It's a keralite eatery located at Arcot road just opposite to AVM studios. Our friends group is regular to this place, mostly for their grilled chicken. Their grilled chicken is one of the best in the city.

Started with half grill(150₹). It was bit oily, but the topped up masala elevated the flavour. Accompanied mayo was not great, but it was not a problem when the meat and the non-spicy masala were heavenly.

One great thing about this place is they never add artificial colouring(or atleast I have never seen that) and coconut oil was used whereever possible. That's why we told to bring butter chicken masala(150₹) and kerala paratta (28₹).

Never order a combo as you will get only a regular rubbery parotta. We always ask for a keralese version which was cooked with coconut oil and was larger in diameter compared to regular one. Loved to smell the aroma of coconut oil. One may not need more than a single paratta.

Butter chicken masala was little sweeter with 4 or 5 pieces of boney fried chicken. It was not a bad choice, more enough of two. Heard they are famous for seafood like kallumakkay (mussels), karimeen and fish moily. Anyhow there is always a next time
